Holiday Travel

The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is the start of one of the busiest travel times of the year. According to PennDOT, the 2008 Thanksgiving holiday period resulted in the most crashes of any holiday in 2008.

During the holiday season, which runs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s weekend, the Manheim Township Police Department will be working together with PennDOT and other law enforcement agencies to increase traffic safety on our roadways. As part of this effort, Manheim Township will be involved in roving patrols, sobriety checkpoints, and selective enforcement details. These efforts are aimed at aggressive driving violations, such as unsafe lane changes, speeding, and red light violations. Officers will also be vigilant for impaired drivers.

Motorists are reminded as follows:

  • Buckle up every time you are in a vehicle.
  • Expect travel delays in the days before and after Thanksgiving and Christmas, as these periods can result in an unusually high amount of traffic on the roadways.
  • Check the weather forecast before you travel, as road conditions can deteriorate rapidly during weather events.
  • Don’t drink and drive.
  • Obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  • Allow extra time!

The Manheim Township Police Department wishes everybody a safe holiday season.

DUI Enforcement during the Super Bowl

January 27, 2009

Super Bowl Sunday is one of the nation’s most dangerous days on the roadways due to impaired driving. As a result, police departments across the state are teaming up for increased impaired driving enforcement over the Super Bowl weekend in an effort to make the celebration safer for motorists. During last year’s Super Bowl celebration, from the period of 6 a.m. on Sunday, February 3, 2008, to 6 a.m. on Monday, February 4, 2008, there were 247 reported crashes, resulting in 3 fatalities.

The Manheim Township Police Department will be a part of the team that will be looking for impaired drivers this weekend. Patrols will be targeting aggressive and impaired driving violations in an effort to reduce injuries and deaths on our roadways. Please remember to be a responsible driver and to buckle up every time, every ride.

Here are some simple reminders:

  • Make a promise to yourself and your family to NEVER drive after you have been drinking, and then keep the promise!
  • Designate a Driver. Make sure you do this before your group starts drinking.
  • Don’t let friends drive if they’ve been drinking. Call a taxi or get a nondrinking friend to do the driving.
  • Be a responsible host. Be sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic drinks available. Watch for signs of intoxication, and never let a guest drive if they have been drinking.
  • Wear your seatbelt! Your seatbelt is your best defense against drunk drivers. Make sure all passengers in your vehicle are buckled up.
