Manheim Township Fire Rescue Strategic Planning Process In November of 2007, a presentation was made to the members of our three volunteer stations regarding the future direction of fire rescue services in Manheim Township. An on-line survey was used to gauge the response of our members. A decision was reached to begin the planning process for creation of a 10-15 year strategic plan to guide the future actions of Manheim Township Fire Rescue. In January of 2008 a 13 member Strategic Plan Steering Committee was selected. The Committee is comprised of three representatives from each volunteer fire rescue station, two citizens-at-large from the community, and two representatives from Manheim Township government. In addition, two non-voting members from the East Petersburg Fire Company also sit onthis committee. The Committee holds public meetings on the second Thursday of every month in the Commissioners meeting room at the Township building. Throughout the process we will post meeting minutes on this web site in order to keep the public informed of our progress. As part of the planning process, a public meeting will be held in order to receive public input on the strategic plan. The public will be invited to attend this meeting, which will be announced on this web site and through the Township newsletter.

Change Your Clock - Change Your Battery Sunday November 2, 2008 An important message for all our residents...
As the time change approaches on Sunday, November 2, Manheim Township Fire Rescue wants to remind residents to make another change that could save their lives - changing the batteries in their smoke detectors. Communities nationwide witness tragic home fire deaths each year. An average of three children per day die in home fires and 80 percent of those occur in homes without working smoke detectors. Nonworking smoke detectors rob residents of the protective benefits home fire safety devices were designed to provide. The most commonly cited cause of nonworking smoke detectors: worn or missing batteries. Changing smoke detector batteries at least once a year (twice is recommended) is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce these tragic deaths and injuries. In fact, working smoke detectors nearly cut in half the risk of dying in a home fire. To save lives and prevent needless injuries in Manheim Township, our Fire Rescue stations have joined forces with Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs to promote the 21st year of the Change Your Clock Change Your Battery campaign. The program urges all Americans to adopt a simple, lifesaving habit: changing smoke detector batteries when changing clocks back to standard time each fall, this year on November 2. The peak time for home fire fatalities is between 10:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. when most families are sleeping. Smoke detector maintenance is a simple, effective way to reduce home fire deaths. Children and senior citizens are most at risk, and a working smoke alarm can give them extra seconds they need to get out safely. In addition, Manheim Township Fire Rescue recommends residents use the "extra" hour they save from the time change to test smoke detectors by pushing the test button, planning "two ways out" and practicing escape routes with the entire family.
