[ARCHIVED] New Building Code Adoption Coming

Per Pennsylvania Act 36 of 2017, Pennsylvania has moved forward with the adoption of the 2015 I-Codes. With the exception of the accessibility provisions on the building code, all 2015 I Codes, with PA specific amendments will become effective and enforceable on October 1st of 2018.

Pennsylvania is on schedule to adopt the 2018 Accessibility Provisions on December 31st of this year. That means that Chapter 11, Appendix E, and all other accessibility provisions of the 2018 International Building Code, as well as all accessibility provisions in the 2018 International Existing Building Code will take effect on that day and will need to be applied immediately to all non-residential permits applied for after that date.

Permits which were issued or applied for prior to December 31st must comply with the 2015 Accessibility Provisions (or the accessibility provisions of any other code edition that the permit may have been issued under).

The 2009 edition of the ICC A117.1 Accessible and Usable Buildings and Facilities is referenced by the 2018 IBC and therefore, will continue to be used as the technical standard for how to achieve accessibility where required by scoping in the IBC and IEBC.
