[ARCHIVED] Manheim Township Historical Society to Hold 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony to Mark 20th Anniversary

LANCASTER, Penna. (August 30th, 2021) – The Manheim Township Historical Society will hold a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 4 pm on Saturday, September 11th at the 9/11 memorial site behind the Manheim Township Public Library (595 Granite Run Drive).

The ceremony is open to the public, and marks 20 years since the 9/11 terror attacks on New York, NY, Shanksville, PA, and Arlington, VA. The event will pay solemn tribute to the victims, and honor the courageous firefighters and law enforcement officers who lost their lives to save thousands of others, and to remember those who helped in the rescue-recovery efforts that followed at Ground Zero.

“This memorial was built so that we would never forget what happened that day. Many people died, including first responders who gave their lives to save others. Although 9/11 evokes sad thoughts and solemnity, it also evokes thoughts of bravery and heroism. It brought all of us together,” said Manheim Township Police Chief, Tom Rudzinski. “It is an honor to have a small piece of the World Trade Center and a beautiful memorial right here in Manheim Township, and it is my hope that our residents will visit it to reflect on what happened that day and to honor the lives that were lost.”

The event will include music, presentation of colors, a rifle salute, taps, a moment of silence to remember those who were lost, and remarks from Manheim Township Historical Society President, Benton Webber, Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Director, Matt Stopa, as well as Colonel Michael Angelo (U.S. Army retired) and B.G. David E. Wood (U.S. Army retired).

“This remembrance is meant to signify our respect for and honor to the unfortunate and courageous citizens who were killed the 11th of September 2001. It also fulfills the intent of this yearly anniversary date called Patriot Day – a day of remembrance and service as exemplified by our call on first responders,” said Historic Society member Vin Kneizys.

Representatives of the Manheim Township Police Department and Fire Rescue will also be in attendance, escorting honored guests and speakers to each memorial site where they will lay a wreath in remembrance.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair.

The event will conclude with light refreshments at the Stoner House / Patio (601 Granite Run Dr, Lancaster) thanks to the Manheim Township Historical Society.
