[ARCHIVED] “Little Libraries” Addition to Community Park Promotes Reading and Sharing in Manheim Township

In mid-October, 2021, Girl Scout Troop 70069 built two “Little Libraries” to be installed at Community Park in Manheim Township. With the help of Manheim Township Recreation and Public Works, the fixtures were officially added on Thursday, October 27th.

The Little Libraries were created to inspire kids, young adults and adults to enjoy reading, and sharing. When a book is returned, the returnee is encouraged to bring another book to add to the collection.

The idea for the project originated from Girl Scout Troop 70069, as they were looking for a clever way to achieve their Silver Award, the second highest award of the Girls Scouts of the USA, and the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

“The girls are all big readers and were trying to come up with ideas for their Silver Award. We spend a lot of time at Community Park, especially during COVID when we needed to have meetings outside,” said Jodi Stapler, Troop 70069 Leader. “They thought adding little libraries where kids who may not want to play while visiting with family could find books to read, as well as others who may not have access to reading materials, but visit the park.”

After presenting their idea to Matt Stopa at the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, Troop 70069 built one library from scratch.

“The first idea was just one library, but while building, the girls thought they should add one on a shorter post so kids could see the books for them, so we made two,” said Jodi.

The two “Little Libraries” are installed and already contain books for all ages to enjoy for years to come.

“The Little Libraries will provide yet another amenity for guests at Community Park, said Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Director, Matt Stopa. “It’s a great way to encourage children to read and share their favorite stories with other community members.”
