[ARCHIVED] Volunteers Needed for Annual Spring Litter Clean-Up Event on April 5th

Join our Spring Litter Clean-Up Event on April 5th along Oregon Pike

The Manheim Township Sustainability Advisory Committee is seeking volunteers for their Spring Litter Clean-Up event on Saturday, April 5th. This is a rain or shine event between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm.

The Committee is organizing a roadway and stream cleanup at their Adopt-A-Highway site along Oregon Pike near Oregon Dairy. Volunteers will help clean an impaired stream within the Lower Conestoga River Watershed, as well as the section of road extending from Compost Park to Creek Road.

During last year’s Spring Clean-Up event, volunteers collected over 700 pounds of debris in 30 bags along Oregon Pike.

Sustainability Advisory Committee Member, Ryan Dodson said, "Cleaning roadways and stream banks in the spring before they become overgrown with foliage is an important way to keep plastics and other waste out of our waterways and water supply, as well as a great way to strengthen the bonds between members of our community.”

Anyone interested in joining the cleanup event should gather at the underpass where Oregon Pike, Jake Landis Road, and Route 222 intersect. Please, park as far onto the shoulder as possible.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome and encouraged to participate; however, minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Due to the cleanup’s location along Oregon Pike, chaperoned volunteers under 13 will be assigned to the stream portion of the event.

To volunteer for this clean-up event or ask any questions, please contact Ryan Dodson at ryandodson17601@gmail.com or call 717-475-0195.

Participants should be aware that they will be navigating wet, uneven ground through dense vegetation, as well as walking along the wide shoulder of Oregon Pike. Wearing closed-toed shoes and long pants is strongly advised. Volunteers should be prepared to crawl through thick brush, encounter ticks and poison ivy, and get wet and muddy. Be sure to bring a water bottle. Gloves, garbage bags, and safety vests will be provided.
